Former president Alberto Fujimori, scheduled for a tongue surgery on Wednesday, Jan. 20, could not undergo the operation due to abnormal blood coagulation tests.

The experts at the cancer institute where he is currently admitted explained that the former leader’s blood coagulation was insufficient for surgery, resulting in its postponement until next week.

Fujimori’s personal doctor, Congressman Alejandro Aguinaga, confirmed that the operation has been put off in order to avoid any problems.

Fujimori to be operated this week

January 18th, 2010 · Comments Off on Fujimori to be operated this week

Former president Alberto Fujimori, convicted to 25 years for crimes against humanity, will undergo surgery on several oral ulcers later this week.  This will mark the second time the former Peruvian leader is operated for this ailment, located under his tongue.  According to Carlos Sologuern, director of the cancer institute where Fujimori will be treated, the operation to be carried out is necessary.

Initially admitted last Thursday, the former president was returned to his specially-made prison cell on Saturday and will be re-admitted on Tuesday for his operation.

Apart from medical problems, a survey by local pollster Ipsos Apoyo released last Sunday indicated that 52% of Lima inhabitants agree with the Supreme Court’s decision to uphold Fujimori’s sentence. Meanwhile 40% claimed they disagreed and 8% gave no answer.

A separate survey showed that 43% of those interviewed believe the former leader should carry out his full sentence, 26% think he should “be freed now” and 12% believe that he should be freed once he reaches 75 years of age.

Fujimori admitted to hospital

Former Peruvian president, Alberto Fujimori, was taken to the National Institute of Cancerous Illnesses (INEN) due to reported pain under his tongue and on part of the right side of his face.

His personal doctor and fellow political party member, Congressman Alejandro Aguinaga, told press that the pain the former leader was experiencing has aggravated since the end of last year. He added that the pain was below the tongue, in the same place that Fujimori had had an outbreak of leukoplakia removed in June 2008.

Though the INEN remained discreet on the state of the former leader’s health, pro-Fujimori Congressman Carlos Raffo stated that ex-leader would remain until all necessary exams were carried out to discard the possibility of cancer.

“It’s only a prevention issue,” said Raffo, adding that they would take advantage of his internment to carry out routine check-ups.

Fujimori, condemned to 25 years in prison for human rights violations, recently had his sentence upheld by Peru’s Supreme Court in an appeal.
